Chimneys
Chimney stacks catch a lot of weather, and worn flashing and pointing around them are among the most common causes of leaks. Older Epsom terraces have big shared stacks (in the Pikes Hill Conservation Area some carry up to eight clay pots), so they're worth keeping an eye on. In the Stamford Green and Worple Road conservation areas, Article 4 Directions cover altering or demolishing chimney stacks, so changes there need the council's permission; repairs that keep the stack as it is are a different matter.
Weather on the Downs
South of the town, Epsom Downs is an exposed chalk ridge rising to around 155 metres. Homes on higher, more open ground take the brunt of strong winds, which is when loose ridges and slipped tiles show up. If a storm has moved something on your roof, get it looked at before the next one.
Where a roof has handmade clay tiles or natural slate, as in the Church Street and Chalk Lane conservation areas, we look for matching materials so a repair blends in.
